LA Times on the UPA Influence
LA Times on the UPA Influence
Charles Solomon discusses the influence of United Productions of America, “the little studio that could - and did,” in today’s Los Angeles Times online. Solomon, the author of “Enchanted Drawings: The History of Animation,” argues that UPA’s “bold graphics, striking colors and stylized movements” influenced Walt Disney and Warner Bros, as well as “the work of studios from Montreal to Zagreb.”
In the article, entitled “Pixar’s Link to Picasso? UPA, the Overlooked Animation Pioneer,” Solomon also quotes working professionals in today’s animation industry who reckon UPA’s influence on their own work: Pete Docter (“Up”), Mike Giaimo (“Pocahontas”), and Genndy Tartakovsky (“Samurai Jack”).
The print edition of the paper should run the article later this week.
