Mr. Magoo... Live on Stage!
Mr. Magoo... Live on Stage!
Christmas comes early this year for fans of Mister Magoo’s Christmas Carol. The 1962 one-hour television special will have its stage debut as a one-night-only benefit for the Actors Fund tonight, in New York City.
Writer and producer Timothy Pinckney adapts Barbara Chain’s original teleplay. A cast of Broadway performers will sing the score by composer Jule Styne and lyricist Bob Merrill. While writing the animated special, the team were also at work on a stage musical about the life of Fanny Bryce (Funny Girl premiered on Broadway in 1964). Pinckney explains that “these guys were at the very top of their game when they wrote the songs for this animated Christmas special.”
Broadway veteran Douglas Sills, who starred in The Scarlet Pimpernel and Spamalot, will take the role of Mr. Magoo as Ebenezer Scrooge. Other cast members include Jeff Blumenkrantz, Jennifer Cody, and Robert Cuccioli.
The performance will be at 7:30pm at the Gerald W. Lynch Theatre, at John Jay College. Not quite Broadway... but close.
