Production numbers offer an insight into the animation process. Release dates can be unreliable for indicating when a film was produced and/or completed. Indeed, theatrical distributors often stockpiled their animated shorts against the possibility of work stoppages or other delays.
The production numbers listed below are based on UPA’s internal documents (c. 1956) and indicate the studio’s own numbering system. Order of appearance within each category suggests the production start. For instance, Rooty Toot Toot seems to have begun production before Barefaced Flatfoot but was released eight months after.
Detail from a model sheet for “Whither Magoo,” released theatrically as Magoo’s Puddle Jumper in 1956.
N.B. For simplicity, all titles of works appear in roman font without quotes, regardless of the original format.
