More Four Poster: Image Galleries of UPA Animation
Michael Sporn continues his online preservation of the forgotten UPA masterwork “The Four Poster.”
Sporn writes, “‘The Four Poster,’ in case I have to remind you, is a live action feature adaptation of a play by Jan de Hartog. It was produced by Stanley Kramer and directed by Irving Reis. The film takes place entirely within the bedroom of a married couple as they grow old together.”
Kramer hired UPA and John Hubley to provided animated titles and interscenes for the 1952 feature. Recently freed of the obligation to make Magoo cartoons, Hubley flexed his creative muscles on “Rooty Toot Toot” and then “The Four Poster.” Sporn’s latest image gallery includes Paul Julian’s devastating World War I sequence, one of the most powerful pieces of UPA animation.
Earlier animated sequences can be seen in two previous posts, part 1 and part 2.
